What is Hard-Boiled Crime Fiction?

The Shelf Care Book Club ETX is heading into it's third month with a classic noir title, The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler. This is one of the best examples of the hard-boiled detective genre being the first appearance of Philip Marlowe. The character was portrayed on the Silver Screen by Humphrey Bogart.
